The rule of thumb
If the repair costs less than about half of what a comparable used device costs today, and you are otherwise happy with the phone, the repair is almost always worth it.
A new battery or a new screen makes a two- to three-year-old smartphone fit for several more years.
Rather repair if …
- your phone still receives software updates (usually 5–6 years for iPhones, even longer for newer Samsung and Pixel models).
- only one part is faulty – screen, battery, camera or charging port.
- you are happy with the storage and performance.
- you want to keep your data and settings without setting everything up again.
Rather buy new if …
- the device no longer receives security updates.
- several parts are faulty at once and the cost exceeds the value of the device.
- the board is badly corroded after severe water damage.
- storage or performance stopped being enough a long time ago.
